Arizona
Though I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I grew up in the Grand Canyon state: Arizona.
Arizona is the 6thlargest state and has many natural and scenic wonders besides the Grand Canyon. Others are Monument Valley; the Painted Desert; the red rock country of Sedona; the Town of Tombstone (famous for the gunfight at OK Corral); and there are many national parks and Indian reservations across the state.
Arizona has various types of climate – forests in the north and deserts in the south. In winter, you can play golf in Phoenix and then drive 3 hours north to go skiing in Flagstaff.
The state capital is Phoenix (Valley of the Sun), the 5thlargest city in America. It is surrounded by desert, and summers (sometimes 5 months of the year) are hot. July's average high temperature is 41° C. January is the 'coldest' month with an average high of 19° C. There is sunshine 11 months of the year in Phoenix.
As a boy, I could go hiking in the desert and swimming in the irrigation canals. I was a member of the Boy Scouts (motto: Be Prepared), and we camped at least one weekend each month. We learned about nature and wildlife and how to take care of yourself in the wilderness. You could fish for rainbow trout, bass and catfish in the lakes and streams.
Arizona is a land with great natural beauty and popular history. You owe it to yourself to visit there.
